Sand Rivers Lodge

Sand Rivers Lodge

Rooms Facilities Bookings Back

The main part of the lodge is built from local stone and thatch, with terraces offering spectacular views across the Rufiji river and the hippo below camp. The interior is split level - the upper level consists of two lounge areas and the bar, while the dining areas and terrace can be found on the lower level. The interiors are cleverly designed, comfortable and tastefully furnished.

Beyond the terrace is the swimming pool which is built around a huge Baobab. In the past the local hippos have been attracted to the pool and have, on occasions, even been in for a dip.

Lunches are mostly served at the lodge, after which you can chill out around the pool or head back to your room for a siesta before taking off for a late afternoon game drive. There is a single long table in the dining room where you can sit with other guests if you want – alternatively, if you would rather enjoy some privacy or to dine with your own group, management will willingly cater for this and set up a table for you in more intimate surroundings.

In general the food is great – ingredients are simple, yet well prepared and presented by trained chefs.

Drinks from the ‘help yourself’ bar are included in the room rate – make the most of this but don’t forget, if you want to make the early morning game drive, then you will have to rise and shine at 05h30.

Electricity is supplied by a diesel powered generator which runs most hours. The lodge offers all types of safaris - drives, walking and river boats. Quite often you will encounter large herds of giraffe when taking a Game drive along the broad open river beds in the dry season.

Game drives are done in are converted open Land Rovers, usually early in the morning, when there is a good possibility of sighting elephants and cats before they retire for their siesta in the heat of the day.

A view to die for from the pool

The possibilities on safari here are endless – you may be surprised to suddenly come across the welcome smell and bacon and eggs being cooked in the middle of nowhere and end up having a bush breakfast at a magnificent setting down on the rivers edge, after which you can choose to take a drive, or to take the boat, back into camp. On other days you be treated to a picnic lunch which will be served out in the bush – there are no hard and fast rules here, just lots of welcome surprises!

The Selous is best known for its boat safaris. Hippo and crocodile are present all year round, as is the bird life. The dry season attracts a range of other game, including zebra, giraffe and elephant to the water's edge.

Another speciality of the lodge is fly camping, which can include any number of nights.
